The General Welfare Clause
by John Bugler
The Constitution, in Article 1 Section 8 says:

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and
Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and
general
Welfare
of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be
uniform throughout the United States;

The left has used this general welfare clause as justification for their massive programs and social welfare institutions. In the above article Mr. Bugler shows why this is a false interpretation that is based on a hunger for power

(This piece was written in the late 90's. The author refers fo a national debt of $5 trillion. Today we have a debt nearing $12 trillion and that after 8 years of a "conservative" President and only 6 months of the most liberal President we've ever had.)
